Community Care,
In Action!

Medical teams diagnosed and treated a wide range of conditions, including respiratory infections, malaria, gastrointestinal illness, hypertension, diabetes, and untreated chronic diseases. It is estimated that over 60% of patients had not received medical care within the previous 12 months, and many were receiving their first professional medical assessment in years—if ever. Early diagnosis and treatment helped prevent complications, hospitalizations, and potential long-term disability.

In addition to immediate treatment, the mission distributed thousands of essential medications, reducing disease progression and improving patient recovery outcomes. Preventative screenings conducted during the mission also identified numerous patients requiring long-term monitoring or specialized care, enabling referrals to regional healthcare facilities.

The mission reached an estimated 9,000–12,000 individual patients, as many individuals received multiple services such as consultation, diagnosis, medication, and follow-up care. Pediatric patients represented a significant portion of those served, with children accounting for an estimated 35–45% of total consultations, highlighting the urgent need for accessible child healthcare services in rural Uganda.

The mission also had long-term systemic impact by identifying critical healthcare gaps, particularly in pediatric cardiology and surgical capacity. Cases like Jeremiah’s highlighted the reality that many patients requiring specialized treatment face limited options due to equipment shortages and centralized surgical services. This mission ultimately served as a catalyst for Indo Africa Charitable Society’s cardiac surgical capacity initiative, which aims to improve local treatment availability and reduce dependence on overseas care.

Overall, the 2023 Buwenge mission represents a significant healthcare intervention, directly improving health outcomes for thousands of individuals while informing future infrastructure investments designed to benefit tens of thousands more.
